Those interested in military history and aviation will find many engaging exhibits at the Athens War Museum, which opened to the public in 1975 to honor Greece`s struggles for freedom and commemorate all who fought for the nation. Artifacts are arranged over two floors in chronological order from ancient to contemporary times. On display are full uniforms, weaponry and armor, memorabilia, photographs, personal letters, impressive replicas, and collections of guns and rifles. In addition to artifacts, there are several documentary films throughout explaining various conflicts in the country`s history from the German occupation in WW2 to more recent battles. Outside and around the museum, courtyards showcase aircraft and large artillery. A nice gift shop can be found on the ground floor.

The museum documenting war events is kid-friendly and would pair well with viewing the changing of the guard ceremony at the Hellenic Parliament building; it is centrally located in Athens’ Kolonaki neighborhood, a convenient 900-meter walk east of Syntagma Square. The closest metro station is Evangelismos (blue line/line 3), the entrance to which is in a park directly across from the museum.
