Top 10 Things To Do with Kids in Sardinia

Sardinia offers a charming and unique family vacation destination. First, it is surrounded by water. Second, it resembles a foot in shape. Third, there are many interesting native animals: the small Sardinian donkey, the mouflon sheep, the white donkey of Asinara island.

Youngsters enjoy Sardinia because it’s so incredibly accommodating to families with children. Here are ten activities to do with your kids throughout your vacations in Sardinia. Enjoy!

THE LITTLE GREEN TRAIN
Small scenic railway that winds into the forests and wildest parts of the island. It climbs the mountains, crosses panoramic bridges and allows travelers to admire stunning vistas. The little green train is often used by school groups, as it considered an excellent way to uncover the hidden natural attractions of the island.

The feral equines of the Giara plateau & Museum of Sa Corona Arrubia
In ancient times, the ponies lived throughout the island of Sardinia, while presently, they reside exclusively on the plateau except for a handful located at Monte Arci. There are only about 700 examples of these small (approximately 120 cm), dark brown, and brisk ponies. The uniqueness of the breed is guaranteed by the plateau`s attributes, being 500/600 meters high with steep walls. Not far from Giara (around 30 minutes away), you can also tour the Museum of the Territory , otherwise known as Sa Corona Arrubia. Here kids can have an educational and engaging time exploring the different segments: fauna, botany, geology, anthropology

Posing for a photograph with the stone animals
Over the centuries, the blowing wind in Sardinia has fun shaping the rocks into various forms that are excellent for kids to study and photograph.

  • Elephant rock in Castelsardo
  • Bear rock in Palau
  • Turtle rock in S. Teodoro

If you want to transition from animals to plants, why don’t you search for the fungus rock?

Diverland
The largest Water Park Village in Sardinia, where your kids will have fun and enjoy the warm weather! They’ll be spot of choice among the 6.700 sqm swimming pools, 1.400 sqm water slides, baby club and animation teams…only 20 Km from Cagliari!

Enjoy the beach of Cagliari: opportunities for soccer and building sandcastles
Poetto, the 8 Km sandy beach of Cagliari, is something you can’t miss if you are in the area. Your kids will have fun making sandcastles, bathing (the seabed is shallow, suitable for children) or taking part to the several activities! (soccer, volley-ball…).

Ice cream at Monte Urpinu
If you are visiting Cagliari, you can of course have a relaxing time in the park of Monte Urpinu. Eating a refreshing gelato (ice-cream) and wandering throughout the park’s paths, while your way will be crossed by a colourful peacock or a lovely goose.

Mountain Bike trails
Lovers of nature and outdoor activities have their choice of several mountain biking trails available. The mountain bike paths wind through some of the island`s most charming and undiscovered regions, immersing both children and adults in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Sardinia miniature
The miniature recreation portrays Sardinia`s most key and representative places within just 360 meters. You`ll find a nuragic village displaying ancient Sardinian people`s habits and customs; an Astronomy Museum; a Planetarium; an exhibit dedicated entirely to Charles Darwin; and finally, a biosphere. The biosphere is seen as a “unique educational experience for environmental sustainability,” as it links the natural beauty to an understanding of the balances governing cohabitation

Neptune’s caves
Among Sardinian caves, Neptune`s Caves are thought by many to be the most fascinating. Both adults and children can`t remain indifferent to the spectacular views! Neptune`s caves can be accessed by a panoramic 600-step rocky stairway, but if your young kids are very small we recommend taking the ferry from Alghero.

Traversing across Europe’s highest sand dunes
The sandy expanses of Piscinas are a region in the central-western part of Sardinia that remains unspoiled. I take pleasure in climbing up and roaming around there, enjoying the perspective and smell of the azure sea from one side and the wild Mediterranean vegetation from the other. How spacious an area is there for children to sprint and roll in the sand!

You are able to visit Sardinia at any point throughout the year, dependent on the kind of vacation you are searching for. July and August are the hottest months (the average monthly temperatures are min. 21 max. 30 degrees), ideal if you wish a holiday focused on sun and fun! For a more relaxed stay, I personally suggest springtime (from March-April to June and September): it’s not as warm and has less mass tourism, allowing you to better experience the nature and history of Sardinia. Winter presents a good period to discover culture and traditions, because you can participate in the numerous festivals and events throughout the island, connecting with locals and their customs. Winter is mild, average temperatures range from a minimum of 7 to a maximum of 16 degrees.
