Notable Towns in Santorini

Fira is the largest town on Santorini and functions as the hub for the island’s bus network (allowing direct buses to most other towns on the island). Fira has the most shopping and nightlife activities. It can become busy (occasionally hectic) but it’s easy to avoid crowds if preferred and the town never feels overrun. A highlight of staying in Fira is hiking along the caldera path to Oia (taking about 3 hours). Firostefani (a 10-minute walk) and Imerovigli (a 30-minute walk) lie further north along the caldera and are much quieter than Fira.

Where to Stay In Fira?

Hotels along the caldera offer magnificent perspectives of the volcano, cliffs, and sundowns (though sundown perspectives do change throughout the year); these hotels I’ve designated as “Caldera View” below. They are, clearly, significantly more expensive than lodgings lacking the caldera vista. If sparing funds is a priority, stay at a hotel devoid of a view and simply enjoy the caldera during lengthy walks and restaurant visits.

2. Cosmopolitan Suites

The best infinity pool in Fira offers stunning views of the caldera. This is one of the most beloved hotels in Fira. 3. Katikies Garden

The only five-star hotel in Fira located within a converted eleventh century Venetian monastery, the Katikies Garden is a family-friendly resort with a pool, spa and exceptional Mediterranean restaurant. Each spacious suite offers either a private hot tub or outdoor plunge pool with roughly half providing scenic sea views over the Aegean Sea rather than the caldera.

5. Aria Suites and Villas

a hotel room with a view of the oceanHotel phone: +30 22860 28650
The hotel provides an amazing blend of luxury and hospitality along with incredible scenic views and exemplary service. The suites are beautifully decorated. The pool is considered one of the best in Fira. As one of the few caldera hotels that welcomes younger children, this is partly because the suites are slightly set back from the cliff edge. The villas are situated down a brief path from the main hotel and have fantastic caldera views and private plunge pools. Suites can accommodate families of 3 to 4 people. Villas can house families of 4 to 6 people.

Fira Village Information

  • Location: Centrally located on the caldera side of Santorini. 6 km from the Santorini airport, 8 km from Athinios Port, 11 km from Perissa Beach and 11 km from Oia.
  • Automobile Accommodations: There exists a complimentary public parking area on the road south of Fira, towards El Greco Resort Hotel. Other parking lots are found across from the McDonald’s and across from Lemon Suites, and smaller private lots are scattered around Fira. Street parking is offered but very limited during the busy summer months.
  • Bus: The transportation hub for the village is located centrally, offering frequent trips to all major destinations on the island using public buses. General information about public transportation and the bus timetable.
  • Dining: This island has many excellent restaurants and cafes that are worth visiting. Some of our favorites are Ouzeri,Naoussa,Lucky’s,Cacio e Pepe, and Selene.
  • Shopping: The full spectrum ranging from small souvenirs to elegant boutiques.

Lay of The Land
The picturesque and lively village of Fira serves as the island’s capital, built within the cliffs of the massive caldera. Deriving its name from the ancient name of the island, Thera, Fira offers spectacular panoramic views spanning the 18km-long caldera, from the southern hamlet of Akrotiri to the northern village of Oia. Equally striking sights of the volcanic island of Nea Kameni and Thirassia Island can also be witnessed from this locale. Vistas of the caldera from Fira are equally spectacular both during the day and at night, with Fira also renowned for its nightlife

The village acts as the commercial center of the island, filled with charming narrow walkways containing garments and gift emporiums, cafes, eateries, galleries, bars, and nightspots, as well as the island’s police station, post office, and other civic offices. The central square in Fira is designated Plateia Theotokopoulou, situated facing the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral with spectacular caldera perspectives. Here there are plenty of coffee shops and places to dine. Along the main road through town are banks, pharmacies, travel agencies, and shops as well as the bus terminal, taxi stand, and a public parking area.

All establishments on the caldera side of the village feature stunning ocean, sunset, and caldera views – making dining, drinking, and lodging there much more expensive. However, wonderful places can also be found off the caldera at a lower price.

The Old Port

  • Funfair – The Ibiza Town holiday funfair is open throughout December and runs well into January. It includes a Ferris wheel, ghost train, carousel, and other rides, alongside plenty of food and drink, including the traditional hot chocolate and churros.

Fira to Oia Hike
Undoubtedly, one of the best activities to partake in while in Santorini is the trek from Fira to Oia. The 10.5 km trail guides you along the caldera cliffs and through the villages of Firostefani, Imerovigli, and onwards to Oia. It takes between 2 to 5 hours depending on your pace of walking and frequency of stopping points. If you make a side trip to Skaros Rock, it will add at least an additional hour. Sections of the trail are akin to a sidewalk, others consist of cobblestone, and some parts are a dirt path. There is a decent climb in both directions. The ascent from Oia to Imerovigli is prolonged yet gradual so you scarcely notice it. The climb from Fira to Imerovigli is brief yet steep. The route is not suited for baby strollers or bicycles. Most 7-year-olds would face no difficulty completing the walk in view of the quality of the pathway, but it constitutes a very lengthy trek for anyone under 10

Firostefani
Firostefani is the smaller village adjacent to Fira, approximately a 1 km walk along the trail connecting Fira and Oia. For those seeking proximity to the activities in Fira but wanting to avoid large crowds, Firostefani offers a wonderful place to stay with equally impressive views. There are 10 to 12 restaurants in Firostefani, a bakery, and a couple markets – though no bars or nightlife options.

Attractions

  • Trail Between Oia and Fira: 1-minute walk. One of the top attractions on the island is this scenic 10.5 km pathway connecting Oia and Fira. A mix of sidewalk, cobblestones, and dirt trail, this route boasts gorgeous views the whole way. Hiking northwest, the full length of the path from Fira to Oia Castle takes about 2.5 hours (add at least 30 minutes for a detour at Skaros Rock when heading north).
  • Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral: This imposing cathedral controls the main square in Fira. Fully restored after the ’56 earthquake, this landmark church is surrounded by a series of grand archways, and is embellished with frescoed walls and ceilings within in gold and vivid colors.
  • Old Dock of Fira: Also known as Fira Skala, the Old Dock has a few taverns, shops, and scenic ocean views. The sole connections from the port to the village are the cable cars, donkeys, or walking up the 587 steps. Now, the Old Dock is primarily used by cruise ship passengers, arriving daily by the thousands in high season. To avoid the largest crowds, plan excursions around the cruise ship calendar.
  • Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist: Often referred to simply as the Catholic Church, St. John’s is recognizable by its brilliant yellow and blue exterior and clock tower.
  • The Skaros Rock: Impressive volcanic rock formation housing the ruins of a medieval castle and town, dating to 1207. The trailhead leading to Skaros begins at Agios Georgios Church in Imerovigli.
  • Fira MuseumsThe Archaeological Museum of Thera,The Museum of Prehistoric Thera, The Folklore Museum, and Megaron Gyzi.
