Staying in Oia – Tips & Advice

  • Oia is the most romantic town in Santorini (along with Imerovigli). It contains excellent restaurants, boutiques, and amazing caldera views. Most lodging is near the primary pedestrian path connecting the prime areas of Oia. There`s only one true bar in Oia but it`s a good one: Marykay`s near the central square.
  • If your budget permits, remain at a Santorini lodging with sweeping views of the caldera cliff facets.
  • Top Luxury Hotels in Oia: KatikiesCanaves Oia SuitesPerivolas
  • Top Villa in Oia: Oia Mansion (historic building full of character and amazing sunset views, ideal for families and small groups)
  • High-quality Low-cost Lodging in Oia: Agnadi View Villa (situated outside of Oia though still within walking distance)
  • Best Affordable Hotel with Caldera View: Rimida Villas

Oia sits at the northwest extremity of Santorini – approximately a 20-minute drive from Fira and 25 minutes from the airport. The town is renowned for its magnificent sunset panoramas, excellent eateries, and high-end shopping destinations. There isn’t much nightlife in Oia but there is one bar, Marykay’s, and several restaurants with cocktail lounges attached for evening drinks.

Where to Stay in Oia
Most luxurious hotels in Oia look south into the caldera and have great views of the volcano and Santorini cliffs. But these hotels do not have sunset views. Only the hotels on the western end of the town can see the sun set into the water. These hotels have partial caldera views.

Oia Village Information

€› Position: Northern tip of Santorini..€

  • Parking: Finding a parking spot in Oia can be challenging. There are a handful of public parking lots (shown on the map below), as well as smaller private lots where parking fees apply. Free roadside parking is possible but limited.
  • Bus: The bus terminal is near the center of the village, with regular buses heading toward Fira. There is also a bus stop at the entrance to Oia at Finikia. General information about buses and public bus schedule.
  • Eating establishments: Various quality restaurants and coffee shops with favorites being Candouni,Ambrosia,Roka,Elinikon,Karma, and Lotza
  • Shopping: The full spectrum ranging from small souvenirs to elegant boutiques.

Lay of the Land
Situated at the northern tip of the island and built into the rocky cliffside, Oia is the most picturesque and romantic village in Santorini. The southern side of Oia overlooks the caldera, providing views of the Nea Kameni volcano and Thirassia island (which belongs to the municipality of Oia). While the northern part of Oia faces away from the caldera, this area is renowned for its stunning sunset and ocean vistas. Typically, hotels facing the caldera do not offer sunset views, and those with sunset views do not face the caldera.

Oia has some of the island’s best hotels, restaurants as well as high-end shopping venues. There are only a handful of bars in the village – those seeking nightlife entertainment should head to Fira instead. A beautiful, wide pedestrian path made of marble runs from one end of Oia to the other, lined with stores, galleries, hotels, eateries, and cafes. The rest of Oia has traditional narrow alleyways and footpaths with charming white-washed homes, blue-domed churches, restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Maritime History
Like other villages on Santorini, Oia has a history connected to the sea. Oia gained economic prosperity from its fleets that traded goods throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, primarily between Alexandria and Russia. The village reached the peak of its success in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Remnants of this prosperous time can still be seen in Oia today within the old two-story, Neoclassical homes of captains scattered amidst the alleyways north of the main pedestrian path. One of these has been restored and converted into the Naval Maritime Museum, which provides an insightful visit. Mansions along the caldera side have been transformed into guest accommodation, hotels, and restaurants.

Sunsets and the Castle Ruins
Stunning sunsets are likely Oia’s most popular attraction; in high season, the village becomes packed right before sunset and paths become very crowded with individuals going to watch the event – viewing spots along the castle ruins and reservations at sunset-view restaurants are particularly coveted. The colors of the setting sun illuminate the white-washed homes and caldera, and every evening, crowds applaud as the sun disappears.

The ideal place to observe the sundown is at the 15th century Byzantine fortress of Agios Nikolaos in the northwest. The fortress is one of the 5 fortified settlements on the island (the other four are Pyrgos,Akrotiri, Emporio and Skaros). All through Byzantine and Frankish rule, the Aegean shore suffered never-ending pirate raids so the islanders were compelled to shift their settlements to additional strategic and inaccessible regions. In 1956, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the island, destroying a lot of the fortress and its encircling structures. Only part of the watchtower (Goulas) remains.

a dining room table with a view of the oceana bed sitting on top of a beach next to the ocean

Ammoudi Bay
On the northwest shore of the village lies a picturesque and renowned cove called Ammoudi Bay. Many boat trips and day excursions to Thirassia Island arrive and depart from this bay, which has served as a filming location for several movies such asSummer Lovers,Laura Croft: Tomb Raider, andThe Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Situated directly above the water within Ammoudi Bay are a few excellent traditional tavernas offering plenty of fresh seafood choices. Continuing west along the path past the eateries reveals a stunning yet rugged bathing spot

To access Ammoudi Bay on foot, there exists a trail near the castle ruins possessing approximately two to three hundred steps (depending on what is read or who is questioned) guiding down to the bay. (See photos below.) By car, directing north past central Oia on the principal roadway; Ammoudi Bay lies about one and a half kilometers down a very narrow path that becomes busy in high season. There is restricted parking at the bay and it is almost perpetually overflowing. Numerous people traverse down on the walkway, obtain a bite to eat at a taverna, and subsequently ask the waiting staff to summon a taxi to transport them back up the slope.

Fira to Oia Hike
Undoubtedly, one of the finest things to undertake in Santorini is the hike between Oia and Fira. The 10.5 km trail travels next to the caldera cliffs and through the villages of Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira. It takes anywhere from 2 to 5 hours relying on how quickly you walk and how often you pause. If you do a brief side excursion to Skaros Rock (in Imerovigli) it will add at minimum another hour. Portions of the path consist of sidewalk, others are made of cobblestone, and parts are a dirt road. There is a good climb in both directions. The climb from Oia to Imerovigli is long and steady so you don`t notice it as much; the climb from Fira to Imerovigli is short and steep. The trail is not suited for baby strollers or bicycles. Most 7 year-olds would have no trouble completing the walk regarding difficulty as the quality of the path is good, but it is an exceptionally long walk for anyone under 10.
