One Day in Seattle Itinerary

8:30 AM ā€“ Morning Coffee and Pike Place Market Experience

a person standing in front of a coffee shop

Begin your first day in Seattle at one of the best coffee shops in the city, Monorail Espresso. This little coffee window sits directly in the middle of downtown Seattle. This coffee shop provides its beverages through a serving window, not a cafe. They have a few chairs and small tables available if you want to sit outside and enjoy your drink, though.

Otherwise, grab your coffee and take a casual stroll down Pike Street to reach Pike Place Market in under ten minutes.

šŸ„¾ Easy | 7.5 miles round trip | Google Maps | Park Website | 30-minute Drive from Las Vegas | Cost: free

a large brown and white elephant standing in a market

Spend time browsing the stalls, watching the famous flying fish at Pike Place Fish Market, and taking memorable photos by the infamous Seattle gum wall. Be sure to stop for breakfast during your visit, too.

If wanting something light and quick, grab freshly made miniature doughnuts from Daily Dozen Donuts. Other options include sweet or savory pastries from The Crumpet Shop or scones and bagels from Three Girls Bakery. For a sit-down meal, visit Lowell`s Restaurant to enjoy eggs benedict.

Once through Pike Place Market, head down Post Alley, past the gum wall, and make a right onto Union Street. Next, youā€™re heading down to Seattleā€™s bustling waterfront.

šŸ‘‰ Pro Tip: Pretty much every local resident will advise you to avoid going to the Starbucks location in Pike Place Market. This is an overly popular spot and the lines are almost always long, particularly on weekends.

One lesser known fact is that this location is not truly the original initial Starbucks. The indicator is the original, but the very first Starbucks area was actually a couple of blocks away. It is recommended to skip this stop in Pike Place Market, especially with limited time in Seattle of just one day, and see my guide for additional Seattle touring suggestions.

11:00 AM ā€“ Seattle Waterfront and Olympic Sculpture Park

a marina filled with lots of boats and people

Prepare for an enjoyable walk alongside the waterfront showcasing major Seattle attractions such as the large Ferris wheel and aquarium.

After crossing the street from Pike Place Market, take time to wander around the Waterfront Park area. Take a look inside Miners Landing, which has restaurants, arcade games, and sculptures. Roam up to Pier 62 Park and play a round of giant checkers.

Take some time to watch the ferries travel back and forth across the Puget Sound. On clear days, the stunning Olympic Mountains come into full view on the horizon.

Continue the northern walk along the waterfront. If the stroll tires you, electric scooters or bicycles are commonly available nearby to speed things up. After roughly twenty minutes of walking, youā€™ll reach Olympic Sculpture Park.

The Olympic Sculpture Park is one of the best Seattle parks featuring modern and abstract sculptures along its pathways. It`s a gradual uphill climb from the waterfront through the park, so take your time.

Youā€™ll get some of your initial glimpses of the Space Needle as you arrive at the top, which should provide a hint as to where youā€™re headed next.

12:00 PM ā€“ Lunch and Seattle Center Exploration

After wandering through the Olympic Sculpture Park, head to Taylor Shellfish Oyster Bar for a light midday meal.

`

Youā€™ll be able to sample some of the awesome seafood the Pacific Northwest is renowned for. Select from choices like the geoduck chowder, Dungeness crab, or clams and mussels slathered in a creamy pesto sauce.

`

After eating lunch, youā€™ll finally have your chance to get up close to the Space Needle. Walk across the street from Taylor Shellfish Oyster Bar to the Seattle Center.

Youā€™ll see the Climate Pledge Arena, home of the Kraken, and the International Fountain almost immediately. Consider catching one of the fountainā€™s water presentations or continuing through the Seattle Center toward the Space Needle.

The Space Needle is located conveniently between two additional attractions youā€™ll be exploring: the Museum of Pop Culture and Chihuly Garden and Glass. These are two of the top museums in Seattle.

First, get as close as possible to the Space Needle and admire this epic 605-foot Seattle landmark. Take a peek up from below at the revolving glass floor. Depending on the time of year, the top may have decorations. Take photographs, but donā€™t ride it to see the views from the top (don`t worry, we`ll visit a different viewpoint later).

Next, check out the Dale Chihuly Garden and Glass. This is one of Seattleā€™s most unique art galleries, with incredible glass sculptures made entirely of glass by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. Roam through the glasshouse and watch a live glassblowing presentation. Be sure to also check out the outdoor garden overflowing with glass sculptures.

Once you finish, head to the Museum of Pop Culture or MoPOP, which was formerly called the Experience Music Project.

This cool and contemporary museum has exhibits related to tv, movies, and music. Youā€™ll see memorabilia from films, and interactive exhibits about horror, science fiction, and fantasy. There is also an exhibit focused on Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Jimi Hendrix. Donā€™t forget to admire the outside of the MoPoP, which is one of the coolest-looking buildings in Seattle.

Once youā€™ve finished exploring the museum, pursue the signs to the monorail.

3:30 PM ā€“ Ride the Monorail and Grab Drinks at Smith Tower Observatory

a train on a train track with graffiti on it

The monorail serves both as an engaging attraction and a convenient means of returning downtown. Ride the retro Space Age-style vehicle from the 1960s when finishing your exploration of the Seattle Center. Youā€™ll enjoy viewing the surroundings from above as you speed between the Seattle Center and the Westlake Center.

Once arriving at Westlake Station, youā€™ll have some choices for how to continue on to your next destination.

If tired feet desire rest from walking, request an Uber or Lyft for transport to Smith Tower in Pioneer Square. The light rail providing the 1 line south to Angle Lake also works, disembarking at Pioneer Square Station.

However, if you donā€™t mind a 20-minute walk, begin traveling alongside Fourth Avenue toward Pike Street. Along the route, youā€™ll pass by another interesting Seattle attraction, the Central Branch of the Seattle Public Library.

The Seattle Central Library is most notable because itā€™s made entirely of glass and steel. Itā€™s also one of the best free things to do in Seattle! Pause and take a few photos of it, and then make a right turn downhill when you reach Madison Street.

a city with tall buildings and a sky background

Walk four blocks east on Second Avenue to reach the Smith Tower. When constructed, the Smith Tower was Seattle`s first skyscraper and tallest building west of the Mississippi River, highlighting its importance.

When you visit, youā€™ll purchase $19 tickets and then ride a historic elevator to the Observatory level where youā€™ll find a cool, speakeasy-style bar. Order some pre-dinner drinks and snacks and relax in the swanky, 35th-floor bar.

Here is the view as promised. You can go outside the bar and take in 360 degrees of sights on the observation deck including Puget Sound, mountains, sports arenas, and downtown buildings.

5:30 PM ā€“ Dinner in Seattleā€™s International District

After taking time to relax with drinks and unwind, it`s time to get some delicious food. Return down the elevator. Head out and begin your short walk to the neighboring International District, one of the best Seattle areas.

The International District has some of the most flavoursome eateries in Seattle. For dinner, there are a few that I suggest visiting

Visit Maneki for Japanese cuisine. This is a historically significant restaurant thatā€™s been in business since the early 1900s. Itā€™s popular, so make sure to contact them in advance for reservations.

Another superb choice is Dough Zone, where various dumpling, noodle bowl, and soup selections are available.

Finally, you may try Tai Tung, a Chinese eatery that was a favored spot of Bruce Lee`s. The generous portions here make it a suitable budget-friendly choice for those wishing to share a few dishes.

7:30 PM ā€“ Dessert and Fun on Capitol Hill

a fire hydrant that is in the middle of a street

When youā€™re all done with dinner, your next stop will be the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood. Walk down to the International District Link Light Rail Station. Catch the 1-line heading to Northgate. Get off at Capitol Hill Station.

Upon arriving at the Hill, there are several activities you can engage in. Feel free to do these in any sequence, or pick only the ones you wish to prioritize.

First, satisfy your sweet tooth. Two great ice cream places are options. Molly Moonā€™s represents the classic Seattle choice. Alternatively, my personal favorite is Frankie and Joeā€™s, which has tasty treats friendly to vegan diets. Alternatively, if wanting something ultra rich and chocolatey, go to Hot Cakes for indulgent chocolate lava cakes.

a book store filled with lots of books

If festivities on Capitol Hill aren`t your preferred activity, head over to Elliott Bay Bookstore, considered the finest bookshop in Seattle. Be sure to arrive prior to their 9 pm closing time. Browse the titles and other merchandise for a while, then make your way to Neko Cat Cafe.

Here, you can relax with a glass of wine or sake and play with adorable cats. Be sure to make a reservation in advance to guarantee time with the cats.

For a more high-energy evening, check out some bars in the area. Unicorn can be crowded and lively, but itā€™s also a fun carnival-themed bar if youā€™re in the mood for it.

Rockbox is personally among my favorites for Japanese-style karaoke. This is another location where youā€™ll want to make reservations in advance.

Finally, if dancing appeals to you, consider checking out Havana for a nightclub atmosphere. You may also visit Century Ballroom (one of my top recommendations for date activities in Seattle). They offer lessons in salsa, swing, tango, and other styles followed by an evening of dancing.

Once youā€™ve had your fill exploring Capitol Hill, catch a ridesharing vehicle back to your hotel. That concludes your one day trip in Seattle!

Many premier attractions in the city are located downtown. This includes Pike Place Market, the Seattle Art Museum, the cityā€™s iconic waterfront area, and several memorable Seattle landmarks.
  • Frankfurt Spring event ā€“ Dating back to the 14th century, this fair originated as a medieval market for selling pottery known as ā€œdibbes,ā€ which is why itā€™s occasionally referred to as Dippemess. How to Get Around in Seattle

a public transit train at a train station

There are numerous ways to get around Seattle. Visitors to Seattle even for a brief time wonā€™t find transportation a limiting factor on their trip.

If youā€™re only in Seattle for a day, I suggest relying primarily on the light rail transit system, buses, and ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft. The light rail is convenient, swift, and dependable. It can take you from the Seattle Tacoma International Airport to the northern neighborhoods of the Emerald City.

If youā€™re staying downtown, public transportation is cost-effective, straightforward to use, and plentiful. Ridesharing services are also great if you want to go somewhere a little farther out. That way, you wonā€™t have to worry about parking or navigating traffic.

If renting a vehicle for this trip, be sure to review Discover Cars to find the most affordable option. This allows comparing costs and identifying the best fit before arrival.

Seattle 1 Day Itinerary Planning Tips

Tip #1 ā€“ Pack a Rain Jacket and Walking Shoes

a man sitting on a bench in front of a city

Rainfall can generally be expected when visiting Seattle due to its location. Since exploring the downtown area commonly involves significant walking, suitable clothing including a rain jacket along with comfortable shoes suitable for extensive walking are advisable. Make sure your packing list for Seattle accommodates staying dry yet active.

Tip #2 ā€“ Download the myORCA App

For anyone relying on public transport to navigate the city streets, downloading the myORCA app is advised. It provides guidance on purchasing physical fare cards.

From there, you can load funds onto the card using your phone. Use this to travel on metro buses, light rail, monorail, streetcars, and more. This represents one of the most cost-effective ways to navigate Seattle on a tight budget.

Tip #3 ā€“ Visit Seattle During the Shoulder Seasons to Avoid Crowds

a tall clock tower in the middle of a park

Youā€™ll want to make optimal use of your time on a brief visit, so itā€™s best to visit when attractions arenā€™t crowded with tourists. The periods between peak seasons are good times for this. The best times to visit Seattle to avoid large groups of people are May to June and September to October.

Tip #4 ā€“ Be Flexible with Timing and Activities

Whether you visit Seattle on a certain day of the week or in a specific season, you may need to modify some of your plans and parts of this itinerary. Some restaurants, experiences, etc. could be closed during certain times of the year or different days of the week. In such cases, try to adapt flexibly to the alterations, and examine any of my articles to find other fun activities to substitute.

Tip #5 ā€“ Make Reservations when Possible

Avoid needing to skip a restaurant or experience you`re excited about by making reservations ahead of time. This is also a good way to make the most of your time. You won`t have to wait in lines or hastily readjust your plans if you get a reservation ahead of time.

Tip #6 ā€“ Decide on Your ā€œCanā€™t-Missā€ and Your ā€œSkipsā€

a crowd of people walking down a street

Seattle is among the USAā€™s major urban areas for good reason ā€“ thereā€™s so much available. However, while one day in Seattle allows a taste of top attractions, itā€™s insufficient time to experience everything.

Prior to visiting, decide on the experiences you cannot miss and those you wouldn`t mind skipping for now. There are always other trips and it`s enjoyable to have something to anticipate on return visits!
