Bathhouse of the Winds, an annex of the Museum of Greek Culture since 1999, also known as the Hammam of Abid Efendi. It was built during the Ottoman Empire`s rule of Greece (1453-1669) and remained operational until 1965; it is the only surviving public bathhouse in Athens.

Structures dating back to the Neolithic period in prehistoric settlements such as Knossos in Crete preceded hammams constructed by Ottomans like this one, which were modeled after Roman and Byzantine baths. In addition to cleanliness, bathhouses were also a place for reflection, relaxation, and an escape from daily rituals. They were locations for social gathering and the only places women were permitted to venture outside the family home. They were often called “the silent doctor” because people believed they had medical and therapeutic effects.

Within the Bathhouse of the Winds, twisting pathways guide visitors through differing rooms and areas. There is an upstairs video area and an exceptional audio guide is available that helps bring the experience alive; be certain to inquire about it as it may not be automatically offered. Situated in the core of Plaka, around a 450-meter walk from Monastiraki Square and underground station.
