The Museum on Panos Street: Man and Tools is an annex connected to the Museum of Modern Greek Culture that merits a brief visit if you’re in the Plaka area looking for a break from shopping or dining. (The main Museum of Modern Greek Culture closed for renovations and relocation in 2015; it will eventually reopen at its new location on Monastiraki Square.) Opened in 2008 and housed within an early 19th-century building, this collection features pre-industrial tools and products of traditional labor depicting the working lives of Greeks, generally following the war of independence through to the mid-1900s.

Across two neatly organized floors, antiquated tools, artifacts, photos, and mementos from Greek hamlets prior to the period of mass manufacturing are exhibited. Inscribed on the walls are firsthand accounts and testimonials from the individuals who crafted and employed these tools. Visitors get a sense of what daily life may have been similar back then and how much the world has developed since the rise of industry. Interactive displays invite guests to explore a bygone era, yet not too far in the past – great for kids. Situated in Plaka, about a 400-meter walk from Monastiraki Square and metro station.
