Hanoi Hotels – My Recommendations

  • There’s a valid reason most people (including myself) want to stay in the Old Quarter: it’s historic, compact, and pulsating with activity. However, it’s also very crowded—overwhelmingly so for Westerners unaccustomed to bursting Asian cities. Vehicle access can be difficult, and narrow sidewalks get blocked by businesses and parked motorbikes. In the center of the Old Quarter is picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • Most internationally branded high-rise hotels are further out in the West Lake (Ho Tay) area, around a 10-minute journey by taxi from Hoan Kiem Lake. These hotels offer Lake views and more space than the Old Quarter, but few facilities are nearby.
  • The French Quarter around the Hilton Hotel is surprisingly sophisticated, with elegant cafés and welcome patches of greenery. It is also very near to Hoan Kiem Lake.
  • Any hotel outside of the Old Quarter, French Quarter, or West Lake may not be conveniently located near popular attractions and likely to have few or none English menus or English-speaking staff available.
  • The airport is more than 30 km from the Old Quarter. Legal and illegal transportation options are readily accessible at the airport, and it’s your best choice for reaching a hotel. Buses from the airport are slow and won’t always drop passengers near their lodging. The Vietnam Airlines office in Hanoi provides a very inexpensive bus service each hour to (but not from) the airport. Otherwise, arrange a vehicle from your hotel or a travel agency or flag a taxi to the airport.
  • Agencies and hotels surrounding the Old Quarter sell tickets for convenient private buses to all significant destinations, and fares ought to involve pickup from the hotel. The train station is practical, and offers services as far as Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
  • Navigating the Old Quarter on foot is straightforward. Taxis are plentiful, particularly along major roadways outside the Old Quarter. They provide affordable transportation and all employ meters. A trusted taxi service is Mai Linh. Also popular are Grab motorbike taxis that carry passengers.”
  • A quaint (but touristy) way to get around the Old Quarter is by cycle rickshaw. Bargain hard; fares are much higher than taxis.
  • There are many well-stocked minimarts in central Hanoi, while malls are located further out in the suburbs.

The 17 Best Hotels in Hanoi

1. Capella

a bedroom with a bed and a mirrorHotel phone: +84 24 3987 8888
The luxury hotel in Hanoi`s French Quarter is inspired by opera and located steps from the famous Hanoi Opera House. The gorgeously and lavishly decorated rooms display historical items related to opera and feature rich colors. Suites show portraits of the opera artist Kate Spencer. Some suites contain living and dining areas, but the Royal Opera Suite includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a dining region, and a terrace with an outdoor bathtub allowing one to bathe under the stars. In the basement, Regale offers facilities like a gymnasium, medical spa, swimming pool, sauna, and steam room. There are no windows at La Grotta, the indoor heated pool area, but it`s reflected from top to bottom by mirrors to a level where one doesn`t know where it starts or concludes. The chandelier in the center can assist you in getting your bearings. The hotel contains some of the finest dining establishments in beautiful Hanoi. Backstage serves modern Northern Vietnamese meals. One can return to 1920`s New York at The Hudson Rooms which provide gastronomic creations. Koki offers authentic Japanese dining. Diva`s Lounge provides Vietnamese-inspired small plates with distinctive cocktails.

The rooms are beautifully furnished; some incorporate separate living spaces, balconies, or interconnecting doors, making it ideal for families. 1968 Restaurant serves signature Asian dishes. Olivine Restaurant provides fine dining on the rooftop with panoramic views of the infinity pool and city. Also atop the roof is Ignite Sky Bar, which features 360-degree perspectives of Hanoi’s Old Quarter along with signature cocktails, small plates, and a DJ or live musical entertainment. 3. Scent Premium

Hotel phone: +84 336 308 979
This small hotel near Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the Old Quarter emphasizes its good location and quality of service. The guest rooms are modest in size yet beautifully decorated with wood floors and generally neutral color schemes. Most rooms accommodate two guests, but the Family Suite includes two queen beds and a balcony. Some rooms lack windows, so be sure to confirm window availability when booking. Guest amenities do not feature a pool, though the spa provides massages and bicycles may be rented for easy navigation around town. The on-site restaurant serves both Vietnamese and European cuisine while the rooftop bar delivers panoramic views of Hoan Kiem Lake alongside refreshments.

4. La Siesta

a bed with a white comforter and pillowsHotel phone: +84 24 3926 3641
Our preferred boutique lodging is modest but elegant north of the Old Quarter. The newest in a line of classy boutique hotels across Hanoi and Hoi An has an elegant contemporary design immediately evident in the lobby, with its sleek tilework, overhead fans, and grand piano. The hotel is on a narrow block, perhaps 50m from the road encircling Hoan Kiem Lake. This is considered the center of the Old Town of Hanoi, an excellent area for cafes, bars, and all types of shops. There’s a bright, breezy rooftop breakfast spot with sweeping views of the lake and Moonlight Sky Bar on the rooftop. Room décor features wrought iron Juliet balconies; the main differences are size and vistas—some have great ones of the lake and city. Unlike other hotels, the suites don’t have a separate living area, but the bathroom has tiled walls and ceilings. It is located on a busy but fascinating street in the Old Quarter.

5. Metropole

a hotel room with two beds and two lampsHotel phone: +84 24 3826 6919
The hotel grants visitors a colonial ambiance with spacious gardens ideal for families. Traditionally attired staff greet guests in French, and an early 20th century French-Indochine theme is prominent throughout. The piano lounge features ornate, antiquated elevators and plushly furnished corridors leading to the hotel’s two wings. Deluxe Rooms exude old-world charm, with polished wood floors and marble-topped TV cabinets. Those in the New Wing are somewhat less enchanting but provide full-length windows allowing appealing garden views. The remarkable courtyard gardens incorporating a greenhouse café and pool are insulated from noise originating from outside traffic. This presents a good choice for families since it is merely a five-minute stroll to Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter.

6. L’Heritage Hotel

a city street filled with lots of trees and buildingsHotel phone: +84 24 6299 3666
Accommodated within the Old Quarter`s welcoming old-city atmosphere instead of a tourist-oriented sanitized version, this property is situated a 20-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. Neutral hues like white predominate consistently throughout the comfortable guest rooms. Deluxe rooms normally lack distinction but incorporate a balcony, while superior rooms have less space and perspectives blocked by slats crossing the exterior windows. The best option involves the roomy suites, showcasing lovely Vietnamese artworks, a desk nook, two windows for maximum perspectives and illumination, and a whirlpool bathroom. All windows are double-paned, blocking most traffic and construction noises. No hotel of this magnitude or place will incorporate a pool, but it does squeeze in a gym and sauna.

7. La Sinfonía Majesty

Hotel phone: +84 243 715 2345
A highly rated lodging in northern Hoan Kiem Lake provides spectacular scenery. The personnel, area, and rooftop perspectives are key features. It appeals to couples looking for a great location and atmosphere. Distinctive patterned flooring and iron accents add visual interest in the lobby, while rooms offer peaceful woods and linens. Some include terraces with lake views while others have small windows, so consider needs when booking. The multi-floor Symphony Restaurant on the seventh level serves an innovative Asian-French menu including Pho with beef tail and foie gras alongside the landscape. An open-air bar atop offers crafted cocktails with panoramic city and water views. On-site La énMay Spa provides Vietnamese, Thai massages plus foot treatments, steam rooms, and facials using natural elements. It`s a brief walk from Thang Long Water Puppet Theater and around 2 km from Hanoi Opera House.

8. De Syloia

Hotel phone: +84 24 3824 5346
Newly renovated boutique hotel located in the southern region of the old Quarter. Key features include the staff, location, and history. This charming hotel was originally a home built in 1936 during the French colonial era but later transformed into a hotel. It was one of the first hotels established in Hanoi. The rooms showcase paintings by Vietnamese artists and warm tones with wood floors. Some rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with views of surrounding buildings or the city. The Deluxe and Presidential suites include one king bed and a sofa bed suited for families. There’s a small gym with a sizable window, a small sauna, and a steam room with a mini Jacuzzi. Cay Cau Vietnamese restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea. Though recently renovated, the entrance to the building and outdoor area retain their original design. It`s a 10-minute walk to the Opera House and near Hoan Kiem Lake.

9. Silk Path

a neatly made bed in a hotel roomHotel phone: +84 24 3938 5555
Understated refinement, with the emphasis on scenic views and location. One of the few hotels facing lovely Hoan Kiem Lake, though a busy road passes between, Silk Path Boutique has restrictions with space, so few rooms enjoy much natural light or superb panoramas. The hotel contains two segments: Block A generally fronts the lake and delivers divine river perspectives (if trees permit). The more recent and tranquil Block B overlooks the city – and parts of the lake, but some rooms lack views. Senior Executive Rooms are not as luxurious as the designation implies but deal with the lake, and some actually have a balcony. These rooms are small yet accommodating; Vietnamese prints include charm. Confronting the hectic lakeside roadway, all rooms at the front suffer somewhat from traffic noise in spite of the double-layer windows.

10. Pearl

a hotel room with two beds and two lampsHotel phone: +84 24 3938 0666
Central, quieter, and a cut above the rest. Instantly appealing, the Pearl provides a variety of rooms across nine floors along a comparatively tranquil street. Superior Rooms are motel-like, compact, and practical but have no outside windows. Deluxe Rooms provide views of the streets or the internal courtyard (which is less exciting but certainly more peaceful) – any balconies are for decoration only and not accessible from inside. Suites offer accessible furnished balconies with street views, albeit limited. The Pearl has a gym, as well as a rooftop bar. Located just around the corner from Hoan Kiem Lake, the nearby streets are jammed with shops, bars, and cafés.

11. Melia

a neatly made bed in a hotel roomHotel phone: +84 24 3934 3343
An enormous, contemporary, and graceful skyscraper located in central Hanoi rises impressively above the busy avenue filled with banks and government buildings. Standing 22 floors high next to a Rolls-Royce showroom, the Melia was designed more with business in mind than tourism. Most rooms fall under two categories: Deluxe Rooms feature stylish and lavish furnishings yet surprinsgly narrow spaces; Premium Rooms have similar decor and amenities but offer considerably more area – a separate lounge is accessed through double doors and a walk-through luggage area leads to the bedroom. Some rooms boast corner windows allowing twice the natural light and views. The third-level pool receives plenty of sun and breeze but seems undersized given there are over 300 rooms. Amenities specifically for children are lacking, yet this remains a decent choice for families especially due to its proximity (just a 10 minute walk) to scenic Hoan Kiem Lake and the intriguing Old Quarter.

12. Mövenpick

Hotel phone: +84 24 3822 2800
This large hotel from the French colonial era has a southern location within the Old Quarter. Decorated beautifully in vibrant colors with modern chandeliers, rooms mostly have neutral tones, wood floors, and accommodate two people though cribs are available. The small outdoor pool has a Miami theme with one glass wall and the Cabana Club serves cocktails and snacks. Gym amenities include workout equipment, massages, a sauna, and fitness instructors. Three restaurants and a bar offer varied cuisine from Swiss to Portuguese and Cantonese styles plus barbecue, and there`s a daily chocolate hour from 5-6 pm. It`s within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake.

  • Warung Nyoman – On the fundamental street, inverse the access pathway to the lodging. Refined and prominent, including an extended menu and calm garden setting at the rear.

13. The Chi

a living room filled with furniture and flowersHotel phone: +84 24 3719 2939
Stylish and welcoming in a premier location. With limited perspectives and undersized rooms, this is still preferable to most of the boutique hotels in the Old Quarter. Standard Rooms are reasonably nice, with shiny bathrooms and polished wood floors. Views (through oversized windows) are much better in Deluxe Rooms, which also feature spacious bathrooms and trendy decorating. Best of all, the open-plan suites contain spa bathrooms and extended balconies. Only one block from Hoan Kiem Lake, it’s set along a pleasant street with a cathedral, a park, and a multitude of motorcycles. (Note that the double-paned windows aren’t always totally effective.)

14. InterContinental

a large body of water with a large buildingHotel phone: +84 24 6270 8888
Sprawling resort with lodging and a bar above Westlake. One of the key features is the unique layout over the water and the perspectives. The resort winds over the lake through walkways to rooms and Sunset bar. It’s a good family choice with king-sized beds, cribs available, and an on-call doctor nearby. Some rooms are directly over the water whereas others are on the lakefront, so be sure to check for it when making reservations. All rooms have a balcony to admire the lake or cityscape. The free swimming pool and hot tub are beside the lake with poolside service. There’s also an extensive state-of-the-art fitness center. Saigon Restaurant serves Vietnamese cuisine. Cafe Du Lac is a contemporary French brasserie. Milan offers authentic Italian cuisine with premium Italian wines and has a pizza oven. There are a few lounges, some of which serve Imperial High Tea, but Sunset Bar is a standout spot for cocktails and dusk perspectives over the lake. It’s north of the Old Quarter and great for a respite from the city, but you will need transportation to most attractions.”

15. Hôtel du Parc

Hotel phone: +84 24 3822 3535
Large hotel located in the southern section of the Old Quarter and a few blocks from Thong Nhat Park. It’s also near the train station. The rooms could benefit from modernization but are spacious and have views of the park or the cityscape. There are smoking and non-smoking rooms, so be sure to specify your preference when reserving. The fitness center is adequately sized, and there’s a sauna and outdoor swimming pool on the fourth level. There are two restaurants and a cake shop serving cheesecake, layer cakes, and tarts. Voyage is an international restaurant with windows facing Hanoi Street, and AZABU serves authentic Japanese cuisine. Enjoy an Earl Grey Cosmopolitan and other beverages at Le Salon Lounge, which also has street views.

16. Hotel de L’Opera

a bed sitting in a bedroom next to a wallHotel phone: +84 24 6282 5555
Unusual and artistic. This colonial-style hotel is along a stylish street of patisseries and theaters just 200 meters from the picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake and grand Opera House. The hotel employs an operatic/artistic motif throughout. Colorful furniture and decor are often eccentric (but not functional), and bathrooms are lit to resemble backstage makeup rooms. Add raised beds so high that some would have trouble reaching them. Others may enjoy its uniqueness. Many rooms face an internal courtyard, while the Opera Residences feature a kitchenette and floor-to-ceiling windows with street views. The third-floor gym is enormous, and the glass-enclosed pool is small. There are two restaurants and a bar.

17. Sheraton

a pool with a pool table and chairs in itHotel phone: +84 24 3719 9000
Upscale and lakeside, but distant from attractions. The Sheraton is the sole high-rise situated immediately next to West Lake. Standard Deluxe Rooms feature tall ceilings, modern Asian design elements and lampshades, and magnificent lake perspectives (though windows are small). Ambassador Suites on the top two floors are superb, with expansive views from the bathtub and balcony (which is, astonishingly, closed to guests). The resort-style pool with pagoda-shaped swim-up bar sits nicely riverside, adjacent to ornamental gardens, but the tennis court is way overdue for maintenance. However, all the space and views come at a cost of convenience. With no facilities nearby, it’s 10 minutes by taxi (or free hotel shuttle) to the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake.
