12 Best Places to Visit in March in the USA

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

A Nevada State Park less than an hour from Las Vegas showcasing peak desert sunrises.

✈️ Travel to Valley of Fire | πŸ›ŽοΈ Lodging in Valley of Fire

While Great Basin National Park and Red Rocks may be widely known, Valley of Fire State Park is one of Nevada’s best kept secrets.

While exploration of the park is far from complete, it is frequently overlooked and still retains its charming nature away from the main areas. March`s cooler temperatures make it one of the best times to pay a visit.

Brew a strong morning beverage and enter the state park before sunrise to experience how it received its name. Pull over on the Scenic Byway and witness the desert sunrise as it illuminates the sandstone rocks.

Get to the park early to see top sights like Elephant Rock, the park petroglyphs, and Rainbow Vista without crowds. There are also two campgrounds inside charging $20 per night for Nevada locals and $25 a night for outsiders.

Palm Springs

A low-lying desert town in Southern California known for warm winter weather and ample golf facilities.

✈️ Transportation to Palm Springs | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Palm Springs| Location Options | Activities

Palm Springs and the surrounding low desert towns are the places to visit during a Californiawinter. Temperatures typically range from 70-80Β°F in Palm Springs during March, allowing visitors to still work on their classic California tan.

Fun lower desert March activities involve the Palm Desert Food & Wine Fest, seasonal performances at the Palm Canyon Theater, and checking out the rest of the top attractions in the Inland Empire.

There are plenty of places to stay in Palm Springs. Winter is the peak tourist season, however, and resorts are fully booked during this time. Hotels in neighboring towns like Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and La Quinta tend to fill less often, so look to those areas for last-minute lodging.

Miami, Florida

A hot spring break destination with beautiful beaches and bustling nightlife.

a large body of water with palm trees

✈️ Air travel to Miami | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Miami| Where to Lodge | Things to Experience

Miami is one of the most popular spring break spots in the U.S.

This eclectic city houses some of the best beaches found in Florida, like South Beach. It also boasts a lively nightlife, putting Miami high on the March travel list for spring breakers seeking to party.

Average March temperatures hover around the 70s, and the high humidity makes it feel like mid-July. The Art-Deco District is a personal favorite of mine. This South Beach area captures the spirit of the roaring 20s through retro architecture, reminiscent of a `mini Cuba`.

Another top Miami experience in March involves visiting the Ball & Chain nightclub. Release your Latin dance moves as you groove to upbeat salsa, bachata, and merengue music.

Joshua Tree National Park

A trendsetting Southern California desert town home to a expansive concentration of Joshua Trees and grade-A rock climbing routes.

a large tree in the middle of a desert

✈️ Travel by air to Joshua Tree National Park | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Joshua Tree National Park| Where to Remain | Activities to Take Part in

Joshua Tree is by far one of the most popular California national parks. It’s only 45 minutes from Palm Springs, and it’s home to the largest collection of the curious-looking Joshua trees in the world.

Joshua Tree National Park features some of the top rock climbing routes in California, such as Chimney Rock and Future Games Rock. The desert area includes numerous hiking trails suitable for varying fitness levels.

Ryan Mountain is my preferred trail in Joshua Tree. This 2.9-mile hike climbs over 1,000 feet to one of the highest points in the park, providing sweeping views of the Mojave Desert. Winter is the ideal time to tackle the J-Tree trails, as extreme summer temperatures from June to September can render hiking nearly impossible.

New Orleans, Louisiana

A festive Cajun city with delicious eateries and live music nearly every day.

✈️ Transportation to New Orleans | πŸ›ŽοΈ Lodging in New Orleans| Accommodation Options | Activities | Dining

Springtime brings a transitional period in New Orleans as carnival season winds down. The city takes on a more local atmosphere at this time. The Mardi Gras visitors have lessened, and Jazz Fest tourists won’t arrive for around another month.

Eating is one of the best things to do in New Orleans during this month of rest. Check out Meg’s picks of the top eateries in New Orleans for a complete listing of must-visit restaurants.

From plane trips to multi-day road excursions, I’ve been traveling with children for over a decade now. In this guide, I share my top family travel recommendations according to my experiences with youngsters of all ages.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park

New Mexico’s biggest national park is home to thousands of Ancient Chacoan archaeological sites.

a woman posing for a picture in front of a mountain

a person on a trail with a dog on a leash

✈️ Trips to Chaco Culture National Historical Park | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Chaco Culture National Historical Park| Activities

Chaco Culture National Historical Park, also sometimes simply referred to as Chaco Canyon, is a remote protected area within the state of New Mexico. Its archaeological ruins and backcountry hiking routes attract notably less crowds during winter months.

Chaco Canyon inhabits 34,000 acres of protected wilderness and 4,000 archaeological sites. Gallo Campsite is the only official campground in the park and is the best place to remain for an unobstructed view of the artistic night sky.

I highly recommend visitors spend a night in this top ranked New Mexico national park. This provides an opportunity to explore more than one hiking trail, such as the backcountry Pueblo Alto route. Tours of the Great Kiva archaeological sites within the park, like Pueblo Bonito, should also be high priorities on the hiking agenda.

Chicago, Illinois

A famous metropolitan city that goes all-out for St. Patrick’s Day.

a large crowd of people watching a large boat in the water

✈️ Flights to Chicago | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Chicago| Location Options | Activities | Eateries

Chicago plays host to one of the largest St. Patrick`s Day festivities in the United States throughout the month of March. Even though the Windy City remains thawing at this time, it represents an ideal destination during this season for fans of this holiday.

A section of the Chicago River (between Columbus and Wacker) temporarily changes hue to honor the Irish tradition. Also inspect the Irish American Heritage Center for live music and dancing throughout the full month.

Saguaro National Park, Arizona

A southern Arizona national park renowned for possessing the largest cacti in the nation is perfect for mountain bikers and desert hikers.

a dirt road leading to a forest filled with trees

✈️ Travel to Tucson | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Tucson | Location Options | Activities

Late winter and early spring offer an ideal time for a vacation to the vast Arizona desert region. During this period, Saguaro National Park comes alive with wildlife activity. This renowned park is home to North America`s largest cacti, the eponymous saguaro, and makes for an easy day trip from Tucson.

Hike among the spiked giants via the Tanque Verde Ridge Trail. Mountain biking is another fun way to experience the grandeur of the desert park. Tackle the Cactus Forest Trail or Hope Camp Trail on two wheels. However, be cautious on the trails at this time, as early spring is peak rattlesnake season.

Another compelling reason to visit the ecological wonder of Saguaro National Park is the stunning sunsets. Take to the air via the Gate`s Pass Overlook and watch the desert landscape transform under the fleeting March sun.

Asheville, North Carolina

A tranquil East Coast town that’s just starting to awaken from hibernation in March.

a forest filled with lots of plants and trees

✈️ Flights to Asheville | πŸ›ŽοΈ Hotels in Asheville| Where to Stay | Things to Do

To avoid the influx of tourists visiting Asheville in the summer, consider traveling to North Carolina during the shoulder season. Wildflowers are beginning to open in March, and the numerous Asheville waterfalls are flowing rapidly.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, considered one of the finest national parks in the USA, remains open year-round. Appreciate trails like Alum Cave Trail with fewer crowds.

Aria Suites and Villas – Outstanding, family-friendly hotel in the heart of Fira, providing 6 high-quality suites and 4 luxurious villas with breathtaking views over the caldera.

Moab, Utah

A desert town in eastern Utah surrounded by red sandstone cliffs, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike or mountain bike.

a person walking on a dirt road next to a river

✈️ Travel by air to Moab | πŸ›ŽοΈ Lodging in Moab| Places to Lodge | Activities

Moab, Utah, is a Southwestern icon. The red Navajo sandstone, combined with the towering snow-capped La Sal Mountains, generates a rare landscape exclusive to Moab alone. Winters in this appealing desert provide relaxed hiking temperatures.

While swimming in the Colorado River running through Moab may not be possible at this time, there are plenty of other fun activities in Moab in March. Explore Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Arches National Parks, all top Utah national parks accessible from Moab.

This town located in eastern Utah is an outdoor oasis. Try your luck mountain biking in Moab on trails such as the Slickrock Trail when the sun is shining. You can also maneuver your way through a quintessential desert slot canyon like Mary Jane Canyon to find additional fun activities in Moab.

Anza Borrego Desert State Park

A desert escape near the Mexican border adorned with palm tree paths and periodic wildflower blooms.

a man sitting on top of a rock in the desert

For those who opt to drive independently, we suggest renting a vehicle either at the airport upon arrival, or in Fira. The trail from the ferry port is steep and slim, with numerous tricky twists and turns, massive trucks, and buses. Leave that navigation to the locals. We strongly advocate booking a car ahead of time, particularly if you require an automatic transmission. There is free parking out front of the hotel (often at full ability), near the Imerovigli Basketball Court, and near Sunbird Rent-A-Car. Imerovigli has the most challenging-to-locate parking in Santorini, so you may must circle around a couple times to find a space.

Anza Borrego Desert State Park is found in Southern California, under a two hour drive from San Diego. It is renowned for its palm oases and Native American artifacts, but Anza Borrego is also an ideal location for camping due to its remote locale.

March presents an excellent time to visit Anza Borrego because it regularly experiences abundant wildflower super blooms starting the last week of February until the first two weeks of March. Bring your camera and a comfortable camp chair and observe the once-barren desert burst into seasonal reds, yellows, and violets.

Hiking is another of the top things to do in Anza Borrego. Try the Pictograph Trail, a 1.8-mile out-and-back path to historic rock art. Or take the loop trail through Borrego Palm Canyon near the visitor center, which leads hikers to a palm-filled ravine.

Washington D.C.

Now that we’ve covered the important details, let’s get into the specific itinerary!

a large body of water with a bunch of trees

✈️ Air travel options to Washington D.C. | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Washington D.C.| Where to Reside | Things to Experience

While Washington, D.C., may experience chillier temperatures at this time of year, it earned a spot on my March destinations list due to the cherry blossom blooms near the national capital. Bundle up in a heavy coat and venture outside to behold the flowers in bloom.

The trees normally blossom around the final week of March, coinciding with the National Cherry Blossom Festival. This commemoration began in 1912 and spans four weeks from late March to early April. A parade through the streets, kite display, and citywide picnic await at this festive occasion.

While attending the festival in town, I suggest exploring some of the nation`s prized museums and monuments located in Washington D.C.. Top attractions for initial visitors include the Lincoln Memorial, collections housed at the Smithsonian, the National Mall, and the U.S. Capitol.

11 Best Places to Visit in March (International)

Venice, Italy

An idyllic Italian destination offering romantic gondola rides and cozy wine cafes.

a row of boats in the middle of a river

a boat that is floating in the water

✈️ Flights to Venice | πŸ›ŽοΈ Hotels in Venice

March remains simply outside of the crest travel year in Venice. As one of the topmost tourist spots in Italy, Venice is flooded with visitors from April to October. Although you may encounter some dampness in March, soppy climate is sure to deter a mass of the crowds.

Be certain to check the climate ahead of time, in any case, to guarantee there are no flood admonitions. I prescribe visiting Venice in early March before the wet season arrives.

Experiencing a gondola ride through the charming streets of Venice is one of the most coveted activities in the northern Italian city. Although pricey (I split the $80 cost with friends), taking a scenic boat journey throughout the Venice canals is entirely worthwhile.

After your ride, stop for a cappuccino or a glass of wine at an intimate restaurant surrounding St. Mark’s Square to end your perfect Venice excursion.

Fes, Morocco

A northern Moroccan city full of culture, a bustling marketplace, and pungent leather tanning operations.

a bookshelf filled with lots of books

✈️ Flights to Fez | πŸ›ŽοΈ Hotels in Fez

Spring and fall experience higher tourism in Morocco, with Fes averaging a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in March. Visitor numbers remain lower in the Eastern Hemisphere compared to places such as Europe and Asia.

Located in northeastern Morocco, Fes is renowned for its historic tanneries and colorful Moorish arches. The medieval walled medina draws most visitors to Fes. Heaps of cheese and desserts, smoked meat, books, and tools can be found at this eclectic old-world marketplace.

The architecture by itself is reason enough to tour Fes. Tile-covered arches and Dark-Age wood surfaces are changed in time in Fes. Fasten your at ease hiking shoes, fill your photographic device bag, and embark on foot to investigate the hidden gems of downtown Fes.

Istanbul, Turkey

This thrilling Eurasian city that never seems to rest is the perfect stomping ground for initial visitors to Turkey.

a brick building with tables and chairs in front of it

Istanbul bridges the Europe-Asia border, as defined contemporaneously as Eurasia. The unique city of Istanbul serves as the gateway capital of Asian culture. Istanbul’s horizon features massive mosques, intricate local cuisine, and busy bazaars.

The Grand Bazaar serves as a one-stop destination for souvenir shopping. In addition to typical clothing and jewelry stalls, the bazaar is renowned for huge piles of dried herbs and spices. Iconic landmarks that cannot be missed in Istanbul include Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Females must cover their heads and shoulders to enter these religious sites.

Istanbul has mild weather all year round. Since peak season is mid-April through October, March makes for the perfect time to visit the lively city to avoid large crowds.

Find excursions to tequila ranches downtown. Top distilleries hosting tours include Rancho Verano Distileria de Tequila and Finca 18.

Other fun activities include lounging around Playa Los Muertos and strolling along the Malecon (beach promenade). Catching some live mariachi music at the Plaza de Armas is another pleasant way to spend time in Puerto Vallarta.

✈️ Travel to Chamonix | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Chamonix| Locations to See | Activities to Partake

Chamonix is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise. Located high in the French Alps, Chamonix is open for the ski season from November to May.

Chamonix is considered one of the premier towns in France, making it ideal for winter sports enthusiasts. It houses some of the most renowned ski resorts in France, perhaps Europe, such as Grands Montets and Brevent.

The month of March provides an ideal time to explore Ireland. Dublin hosts a 5-day St. Patrick`s Day Festival, featuring a substantial street march on the 17th. The lanes flood with a green hue for this homage to the nation`s patron saint.

Colorful floats line the roadway from Parnell Square to Cuffe Street, with half a million parade attendees cheering on the festive celebrations. Family activities like a circus and movie shelter can be discovered in the Festival Quarter, the transformed Collins Barracks.

✈️ Travel to Nepal | πŸ›ŽοΈ Accommodations in Nepal

Nepal is located in South Asia bordered by India and Tibet, and it offers adventures for outdoor enthusiasts. Nepal houses some of the tallest mountains worldwide, including the iconic Mount Everest.

Most first time visitors to Nepal fly into Kathmandu, a city rich with temples. From here, travelers head either to their trekking base camp or remain in the city to explore sites like the Pashupatinath Temple or Buddha Stupa architectural works.

March offers ideal conditions for mountain climbing in Nepal, as it falls outside the monsoon season. Popular treks from Kathmandu include Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit. It`s also one of the best places for backpackers seeking to travel frugally.

Anegada has untouched coral reefs and is favored for diving below the surface. The renowned pale sand beaches of the Attractions on Virgin Gorda are a must-see. Jost Van Dyke is the last major island and known for its world-famous coastline bars.

A major Flamenco center, Granada is among the most visited destinations in Spain. It`s also home to one of the finest markets in Spain. March falls outside the peak season, so you`ll likely encounter just a handful of other sightseers at this time. It will be cool, however, with average daily temperatures of 62Β°F.

The Mirador de San Nicolas lookout point, Alhambra Palace compound, and Granada Cathedral are amongst the most visited destinations in the city. I also advise exploring local Flamenco dance performances, the national dance style of Spain.

The Sacromonte neighborhood is a popular spot for flamenco shows, like those I witnessed near Mirador de San Nicolas.
