Hotel Review

Honeymoon Petra Villas – Striking, lava rock hotel perched on the caldera’s edge with a large infinity pool, 24-hour bar, and spectacular views.

This five-star boutique hotel offers a choice of traditional or contemporary suites, some with indoor or outdoor hot tubs. Suites in the Traditional Wing offer the most privacy, while the Petra Wing suites have private balconies and sit closer to the hotel’s facilities. The infinity pool for honeymooners at Hotel Petra has an attached hot tub, and is among the largest in the caldera: long enough for swimming laps and deep enough for diving. Its restaurant serves Greek and Mediterranean favorites with a privileged sunset view, and the 24-hour poolside bar serves a fantastic selection of local wines and handcrafted cocktails. Unique, local insights (the current owner was born and raised onsite), massage and steam rooms, and exclusive sailing trips round out the experience here.

Honeymoon Petra Villas – Location

Situated in the beautifully located Imerovigli village, this hotel provides stunning views throughout as well as easy access to notable dining and attractions within a short walk. Imerovigli is the highest point around the caldera, allowing guests panoramic perspectives.

How to Get There:
Complimentary airport or port transfer is incorporated into the room rates. The hotel sits high above the caldera in Imerovigli village, not far from the main road connecting Fira and Oia, making it effortless to access by bus, taxi, or driving yourself. It is approximately 8km from the Santorini Airport to the villas, and 12km from the ferry terminal.

There are always buses waiting at the ferry port for every ferry arrival, as well as buses departing hourly from Santorini Airport. There are no direct buses from the port or airport to Imerovigli, however; buses from both locations travel to Fira, where you must then board a different bus to Imerovigli – the entire trip from the port or airport to Imerovigli will take around an hour and cost about €5 in total. Tickets are purchased on the bus, in cash only. The bus halt is just 4 minutes away on foot, and the walk from there to the hotel entrance is mostly flat, easy to navigate with luggage.

Transportation options on the island of Santorini include taxis. There are approximately 25 taxis serving the entire island, so wait times can be lengthy; reserving a vehicle through a private service like Welcome Pickups is recommended to avoid delays. Taxis on Santorini do not utilize meters, so be sure to agree upon a set price with the driver before departing. A taxi from the airport to Honeymoon Petra Villas usually costs about €25 to €30, while transportation from the ferry terminal to the hotel is roughly €30. Organizing transport through a private service only costs a bit more, around $45 (or €37), but offers the benefits of minimizing wait times and pre-paying for convenience.

For travelers who prefer self-driving, we advise booking a rental car either upon arrival at the airport or in Fira. The road from the ferry port is steep and narrow with many tricky turns, large trucks, and buses. Leave the navigating to the locals. We strongly suggest reserving a vehicle ahead of time, especially if an automatic transmission is needed. Upon arriving in Imerovigli, Honeymoon Petra Villas offers free parking in their lot near the Santorini Sailing Center, approximately a 5 minute walk away (a major perk).

Nearby: The Oia-Fira Hiking Trail, Anastasi Church, Skaros Rock.

Honeymoon Petra Villas – Local Transport

  • Getting Around on Foot: Situated in the center of Imerovigli above the caldera, and along the Oia-Fira hiking trail, the hotel provides easy access to the village`s best eateries, boutiques, and attractions within a short walk. It also allows for a 30-minute stroll south along the path to the nightlife and shopping of Fira.
  • Bus: The nearest bus stop is in the village of Imerovigli, near Sunbird car rental and Posidonia Tavern, a 4-minute walk from the hotel. Buses here serve all of the major towns and beaches on the island, often requiring a transfer in Fira if heading to the airport, port, or beaches. Tickets are purchased on board and range from €1.80 to €2.50 per person during daytime hours, depending on the route. Night buses (12:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.) run less regularly and cost a little more, from €2.30 to €3.10. Buses can become very crowded, especially during high season, so much so that they frequently reach full capacity and are unable to accept additional passengers. Only 23 public buses serve the island.
  • Taxis: The closest taxi stand is located at Stathmos Taxi all the way in Fira, making it impractical to walk or take buses to reach it. Furthermore, with guests from approximately 1,000 hotels, villas, and Airbnbs on the island, there are usually only around 25 taxis serving the entire location (resulting in potential waits at this stand). It`s advisable to reserve a taxi ahead of time to avoid any delays, and arrange for them to meet you directly at your hotel. Small additional fees are commonly charged for advance reservations as well as for transporting luggage, typically just a few Euros. The average fare from Imerovigli to Fira is roughly €15, and from Imerovigli to the airport or port is around €25 to €35.
  • Motorized Transportation: Scooters are the primary mode of transportation for locals, yet unfamiliar terrain makes their operation risky. Roads zigzag and climb hills at steep angles with sheer drops lacking guardrails or nighttime lighting in most areas. Numerous dirt paths and sunken sections are present.
  • ATVs/Quads: While ATVs offer amusement and are commonly used by visitors, locals stuck behind them may find their slower pace and congesting of roadways troublesome in an area where transportation is already difficult. Those without regular experience operating quads (i.e. most people) could face hazards at high speeds or on turns. Crashes can easily ruin one`s holiday.

Nearby Attractions

  • Trail Connecting the Cities of Oia and Fira: One of the top destinations on the island is this scenic 10.5 km hiking route linking Oia and Fira. Composed of sidewalk, cobblestones, and dirt path, this course boasts gorgeous views the full stretch. Hiking northwest, the entire length of the path from the hotel to Oia Castle occupies from 2 to 4 hours; heading south to where the trail ends in Fira, near Keti Hotel, consumes about 30-40 minutes. Add roughly an hour for a diversion at Skaros Rock either way. Only a 1-minute walk from the hotel.
  • Agios Georgios Church: Small white church on a platform over the caldera, denoting the starting point of the path to Skaros Rock. Stunning, panoramic perspectives from here.

  • Imerovigli Basketball Court: Not an attraction of note, but useful to be aware of. This serves as the primary parking area in Imerovigli village.
