Athina Luxury Suites – Location

Area: With unobstructed views stretching from Oia to Akrotiri, this hotel in a tranquil part of Fira overlooks the volcanoes and Thirassia Island. Situated down the caldera`s slope, it is a brief stroll to Fira`s nightlife or the romantic scenery of Imerovigli.

Reaching the Destination: Athina Luxury Suites is located midway along the caldera in Fira, very near the primary walking route and a slight distance further to the main road connecting Fira with the rest of the island, allowing easy access by bus, taxi, or self-driving. The hotel is in a pedestrian-only area with winding paths that can pose difficulties with luggage and navigation. However you select to arrive, ask the hotel to meet you on the pedestrian path facing the cathedral to assist you the remainder of the way. It is approximately 8km from the Athinios ferry port and 5km from the Santorini Airport to reach the hotel.

Buses are consistently waiting at the ferry port for every arrival of passengers, as well as buses departing hourly from Santorini Airport. All buses make a stop in Fira. The entire trip from port or airport to Fira usually requires about 25 minutes (longer if traffic is heavy) and costs approximately €2. Tickets must be purchased on the bus using cash only. From the Fira Bus Terminal, it’s just a 5-minute walk to Athina Luxury Suites.

Taxi vehicles are also available from the port or airport, though there are only roughly 25 taxi cars serving the entire island, so waiting is often required; scheduling a ride in advance through a private transportation company is recommended to avoid delays (I use and suggest Welcome Pickups). Taxis on Santorini are not metered, so be sure to agree on a price with the driver before departure. A taxi from the airport to Athina Luxury Suites will cost approximately €25. A taxi from the ferry port to the hotel will cost around €25-€35. Booking through a private transportation service will only cost a bit more – about $45 (or €37), but is worthwhile to avoid waiting and for the convenience of pre-paying.

The paragraph recommended ” renting a car” either upon arrival at the airport or in Fira for those wanting to drive themselves in Santorini. It was noted that the road from the ferry port is steep with many turns, large vehicles, and buses, so taking a vehicle is preferred over navigating the route on foot. Advance reservations for car rentals were strongly advised, especially for automatics. Parking lots within a 5-10 minute walk were also noted

Nearby to: The trail connecting Oia and Fira, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, nightlife, dining, and shopping areas in Fira.

Athina Luxury Suites – Local Transport

  • Walking: The hotel is located in the heart of Fira, directly above the large crater and on the mountain path between Oia and Fira. The island`s finest restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions can be reached within just a few meters. Fira is excellent for walking, as nearly everything anyone could want can be found within 5 minutes no matter the direction.
  • Bus: The central bus station in Fira, a 6-minute walk from the hotel, serves as Santorini’s bus hub. All routes to the port, airport, beaches, and other villages pass through Fira, making this a hugely convenient spot for exploring the whole island. Tickets are bought on board and range from €1.80 to €2.50 per person during the day, depending on the route. Night buses (12:30 am to 5 am) run less regularly and cost a little more, from €2.30 to €3.10. Buses can become very crowded, especially during the high season, so much so that they often reach full capacity and are unable to take on more passengers. There are only 23 public buses serving the island.
  • Taxis: The nearest taxi stand can be found at Stathmos Taxi in Fira, approximately 5 minutes away on foot. There is regularly a delay here as just 25 taxis serve the whole island (with guests from about 1,000 hotels, villas, and Airbnbs). Pre-book to prevent waiting, and have the driver meet you closer to the hotel. A small additional charge will be incurred for advanced reservations and for transporting luggage, usually only a couple of Euros. The average price from Fira to the port is between €10 to €15, and from Fira to the airport is around €25.
  • Motorbikes: Locals commonly use motor scooters as transport, but unfamiliar roads present hazards. Thoroughfares zigzag steeply upwards and downwards on narrow paths sometimes without guardrails or nighttime illumination. Unpaved trails and potholes are common.
  • ATVs/Quads: ATVs are an enjoyable and popular method of transportation with visitors, but for the locals required to drive behind them, they maneuver too gradually and hold up traffic in an area where moving around is already challenging. For individuals who don’t routinely ride quads (i.e. most people), they can be risky at high speeds and on turns. Crashed your ATV is a guaranteed way to ruin your vacation.
