    Hotel Review

Canaves Oia Suites – Five-star, all-suite accommodation overlooking the caldera in Oia with a spa and two pools.

This elegant property provides thirty suites and a villa, each with a private, heated dipping pool and lavish perks, like a pillow menu, a welcoming bottle of wine, and unbelievable vistas. The spa boasts indoor treatment rooms in a converted 17th-century wine cave, as well as an outdoor treatment terrace overlooking the caldera. The main pool incorporates a built-in hot tub, while the new infinity pool, carefully positioned on the caldera’s edge, features partially submerged sun loungers. Dining is superb at their gourmet restaurant Petra (casual poolside nourishment and drinks during the daytime; romantic, gourmet experience at night), or on the romantic Panorama Terrace with only one candlelit table for two people)..

    Canaves Oia Suites – Location

Location: Fantastic setting on the caldera’s edge in the center of Oia, just inside the pedestrian-only zone. The hotel is less than 5 minutes from several amazing restaurants, cafes, and boutiques and about 8 minutes from the Oia Bus Terminal.

Getting There: The hotel is strategically placed just off the main road into Oia, making travel to and from available by taxi, personal vehicle, or bus. It is roughly 18km from the Athinios ferry port and Santorini Airport, although they are in opposing directions.

Public transportation in the form of buses is always waiting at the ferry terminal for every boat arrival, along with buses departing regularly from Santorini Airport. However, there are no direct buses from the port or airport to Oia; buses from both areas go to Fira first, where travelers must then board a different bus to arrive at Oia – the entire trip from the port or airport to Oia will take at minimum one hour and cost approximately €5 total. Tickets can be purchased on the bus using cash only. From the Oia Bus Terminal, it’s a simple 8-minute walk to reach the hotel.

Transportation services are also available from the port or airport, though there are only approximately 25 taxis serving the whole island, so there is often a wait; schedule a ride through a private car service in advance to avoid this (I use and recommend Welcome Pickups). Taxis on Santorini are not metered, so be sure to agree on a price with the driver before setting out. A taxi from the airport to Canaves Oia Suites will cost roughly €35 to €40. A taxi from the ferry port will cost around €35 to €40. Booking through a private car service will cost only a bit more – about $60 (or €50), but is worth it to avoid the wait and for the convenience of paying ahead.

For those preferring self-drive options, we suggest renting a vehicle upon arrival at the airport, or in Fira. The road from the ferry port is steep and narrow, with many tricky turns, large trucks, and buses to navigate. We strongly advise reserving ahead of time, particularly if an automatic transmission is required. Canaves Oia Suites provides free parking in their nearby lot.

Close to: The starting point of the pedestrian path, Church of Panagia of Platsani).

Canaves Oia Suites – The Basics

    • Ages: Exclusively for adults, only guests thirteen and older are permitted. Patrons typically include couples commemorating a special event, usually a honeymoon or anniversary, though some families with older children visit especially in summer.
    • Coastline Area: The closest location for swimming is Ammoudi Bay, the main port directly under Oia which is only 1 kilometer from the hotel. This area is popular for cliff jumping and submerging in the water; however, the rocky shoreline is too small for extensive lounging. Several notable seafood eateries with spectacular views line Ammoudi Bay. Though a steep descent and ascent, taxi service is readily available at the bottom to transport guests back uphill after a meal. (Order a snack and staff will happily call a cab.)
    • The view is astounding, with panoramic caldera views throughout the hotel.
    • Private Pools/Jacuzzis: All suites and the villa feature heated private plunge pools with caldera views for relaxation.
    • Parking: Complimentary parking in their nearby lot.
    • Extras: Welcome beverage, welcome bottle of wine and fruit basket, pillow menu, wine tasting experience in their private cellar (additional fee), Greek clothing boutique, private dining on the Panorama Terrace (extra fee), weekly feature night (cocktails, tasting menu, live music, etc).
    • When to Book: The hotel usually operates from early April until late October/early November. Reserve at least 4 months in advance (6 months is better) for stays during high season from June through September, and about 2 months in advance for the low and shoulder seasons.
    • How to Reserve: Booking.com will have the most competitive rates.

    Canaves Oia Suites – Amenities

    • The resort had a swimming pool that transitioned into an infinity design with an integrated hot tub. It was mostly exposed to sunlight with a small shaded section.
    • Spa: Full service spa in two areas: the main section is in a converted 17th century wine cave, and the outdoor portion is on a terrace with caldera views.
    • Fitness Center: Small gym equipped with cardio machines, free weights, and a cable machine. There is also an outdoor area for yoga and meditation.
    • For Guests with Mobility Limitations: This caldera hotel has many stairways throughout and while there is an elevator, it does not access all floors of the hotel. Due to staircase access, this hotel may not be suitable for individuals with mobility difficulties.
    • For Families: An adults-only hotel, only guests aged 13 and over are permitted. There are no special amenities or facilities for children. For families with older kids, they offer some two-bedroom, two-bathroom suites that can accommodate up to 5 guests.
    • Activities: Wine tasting in their private cellar, weekly event night at the Pool Bar.

Canaves Oia Suites – Food and Drink

    • Restaurant: Petra is their all-day establishment, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. The ambiance is casual during the daytime, offering standard fare, and a little more refined in the evenings, focusing on elevated Greek-Mediterranean dishes, with especially great seafood selections. Petra is reserved for guests’ use in the daytime, and opens to the public in the evening – so it’s a wise idea to reserve ahead to secure a table with a scenic view. Petra also plans the meals that are served to the private dining table on the Panorama Terrace.
    • Lounge/Bar: The poolside bar is situated in Petra, and offers excellent cocktails and small snacks throughout the day until 11:00 p.m. Once weekly, there is a special event night; activities vary but generally focus on cocktails, food and wine tasting, or live music.
    • Breakfast: Complimentary breakfast served daily, featuring an American champagne breakfast buffet at Petra or served à la carte to the suites at no extra fee. Breakfast is served from 8:00 until 11:00 a.m.
    • Room Service: Available all day during regular dining hours.

    Canaves Oia Suites – Rooms

    • Accommodation Types: Junior Suite with Private Pool • Superior Suite with Private Pool • Honeymoon Suite with Private Pool • River Pool Suite • Grand Suite with Private Pool • Infinity Pool Suite • Canaves Suite with Private Pool • Presidential Suite with Private Pool • Executive Suite with Underground Pool
    • Smoking Rooms: Canaves Oia Suites does not allow smoking in any of their room categories. It is allowed on the private outdoor terraces and in the outdoor common areas.
    • Preferred Accommodation: The Presidential Suite with Immersing Pool and Terrace and the Executive Suite with Cave Decorated Pool are their top ranked rooms. Both encompass 60 sqm, with one bedroom, a lavatory with rain shower and soaking tub, and both include heated, exterior plunge pools. The key difference between the rooms is that the immersing pool for the Executive Suite highlights a cave-style architecture, so it is shielded from the sun, while the immersing pool for the Presidential Suite is exposed to the sun.
    • For Families: Families have two suite choices which feature two bedrooms, two bathrooms, separate living areas and private terraces for al fresco meals with personally owned heated plunge pools. The Grand Suite spans 55 square meters with a master bedroom containing a king bed and ensuite bath plus a second queen bedroom and common bath on the same floor. The Canaves Suite spreads over 60 square meters putting the king master bedroom and upstairs bath apart from the downstairs second queen or twin bedroom and bath. The Canaves Suite also includes a sauna area.

Canaves Oia Suites – Local Transport

    • Walking: The hotel is situated right in the heart of Oia, at the beginning of the marble pedestrian path, surrounded by an endless choice of eateries, boutiques, and attractions. The Oia Bus Terminal is just an 8-minute stroll away on foot, while Oia’s most pictured church, Panagia of Platsani, is only a 7-minute walk away. The castle ruins, the island’s most popular sundown vantage point, is a 14-minute walk westward, while Ammoudi Bay is just a little further, 20 minutes from the hotel.
    • Public Transportation: Canaves Oia Suites is exceptionally near the Oia Bus Terminal, just 8 minutes away. Buses here travel to Fira (with some stopping in Firostefani and Imerovigli). To get to the airport, port, Akrotiri, or the beaches you`ll need a different bus in Fira. Tickets are purchased onboard and range from €1.80 to €2.50 per traveler during the day, contingent on the route. Nighttime buses (12:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.) operate less regularly and cost a little more (from €2.30 to €3.10). Buses can fill up very quickly, especially in high season, so much so that they often reach full capacity and are unable to take on additional passengers. There are only 23 public buses serving the island.
    • Taxis: The closest taxi stand is situated at Stathmos Taxi, adjacent to the Oia Bus Terminal. Occasionally there exists a wait here as only twenty-five taxis cater to the entire island (such as guests from approximately one thousand hotels, villas, and Airbnbs). Pre-booking is advisable to circumvent the wait, moreover you can have them encounter you directly at the lodging. There will be a minor additional charge for advanced reservations and for transporting baggage, usually just a couple of Euros. Generally the rate from Oia to Fira is €15 and from Oia to the airport operates about €25.
    • Motorbikes: Locals commonly use motor scooters as transport, but unfamiliar roads present hazards. Thoroughfares zigzag steeply upwards and downwards on narrow paths sometimes without guardrails or nighttime illumination. Unpaved trails and potholes are common.
    • ATVs/Quads: ATVs are an enjoyable and popular method of transportation with visitors, but for the locals required to drive behind them, they maneuver too gradually and hold up traffic in an area where moving around is already challenging. For individuals who don’t routinely ride quads (i.e. most people), they can be risky at high speeds and on turns. Crashed your ATV is a guaranteed way to ruin your vacation.
