Kamari is a wonderful, family-friendly coastal town located on the eastern shore of the island – situated on the opposite side compared to the volcanic caldera which hotels with caldera views are generally found. It has a pedestrian beachfront promenade lined with numerous bars and restaurants, splendid swimming beaches with pebbles, and a relaxed vibe. Taking the bus or taxi into Fira takes around 15 minutes making day trips to the cliffside towns straightforward. (Changing buses in Fira allows travel to Oia.) During summer late buses run from Fira to Kamari sometimes well past midnight as late as 3:30 am. A taxi from Fira to Kamari will cost about €15. Taxi from Oia to Kamari ranges from €20 to €25. Kamari is also home to the fantastic open-air cinema considered a must-see experience.
Perissa is the other primary beach town in Santorini. The beach there has nicer sand and the town has a little more relaxed charm (it seems less resorty and more like a California beach town). But it’s much quicker and simpler to get to Fira (or Oia) from Kamari than from Perissa.
The finest hotel in Kamari that’s directly on the beach is Sigalas – the other hotels listed below are either across a pedestrian road from the beach or back a few streets – which isn’t a big deal but at Sigalas you can walk straight from your room or the pool to the sea).
