Hotel Review

Katikies Kirini – Elegant caldera hotel with a tranquil spa, two pools, and an incredible restaurant.

This heavenly, all-suite lodging boasts traditional, cave-style architecture and sweeping caldera perspectives throughout the property. Most suites include a private jacuzzi, pool, or both, and range from 30 to 40 square meters, with the higher categories featuring the largest outdoor areas. The main infinity pool offers spectacular views, while the heated spa cave pool is hidden from the sun. Its spa features a steam room and three private suites, one of which is on the rooftop, perfect for couples’ sunset massages. Service is incredible and personalized with their 1:2 staff to guest ratio. Their Katikies Club, which all guests become part of just by staying, offers exclusive experiences from sailing to wine tastings, VIP access to the archaeological site, and more..

Katikies Kirini – Location

Excellent location on the caldera at the entrance to Oia. The hotel is within a 3 to 20 minute walk to the best restaurants, shops, and attractions in the village, but in a quieter section removed from large numbers of cruise ship visitors.

How to Get There:
The hotel lies on a footpath just away from the main road into the town of Oia, making it very convenient to travel to and from whether by taxi, driving oneself, or riding the bus. It is roughly 18km from both the Athinios ferry port and the Santorini Airport to the hotel, though they are in opposing directions

Travel between the ferry port, airport, and village of Oia can be accomplished through Santorini`s public transportation services. Upon each ferry`s arrival or hourly departures from the airport, coaches are waiting to transport passengers. There are no direct coaches from either the port or airport to Oia; the coaches from those locations go to Fira first, where travelers must then board a different coach to reach Oia. The total travel time from the port or airport to Oia takes at least an hour and costs approximately €5. Tickets can be purchased with cash directly on the coaches. From the nearest coach stop, it’s just a 14-minute walk to the hotel.

Transportation like taxis are also available from the port or airport, though there are only about 25 taxis serving the whole island, so you may have to wait; schedule a ride in advance through a private car service to avoid this (I use and recommend Welcome Pickups). Taxis on Santorini are not calculated based on a meter, so be sure to agree on a price with the driver before departing. A taxi from the airport to Katikies Kirini will cost approximately €35 to €40. A taxi from the ferry port will cost around €35 to €40. Booking through a private car service will cost only a bit more – about $60 (or €50), but is worthwhile to avoid the wait and for the convenience of paying ahead.

For individuals who prefer to drive themselves, we recommend renting a vehicle either at the airport upon arrival, or in Fira. The route from the ferry port is steep and narrow, with many tricky turns, large trucks, and buses. Leave navigating that to the locals. We strongly advise reserving transport in advance, particularly if an automatic transmission is required. Upon arrival at the hotel, Katikies Kirini offers free valet parking onsite (a major benefit).

  • Proton Supermarket: Small shop, but usually has the best prices. This is where most locals shop in the area.

Katikies Kirini – The Basics

  • Ages: This adults-only hotel only allows guests ages 13 and older. Couples usually visit to celebrate occasions like honeymoons, anniversaries, or weddings held at the location.
  • Waterfront area: Within a short drive of approximately 2 km from the hotel is Ammoudi Bay, the main port of Oia which presents opportunities for swimming though it lacks a conventional sandy beach. This location has become popular for cliff diving and taking a dip in the waters despite the rocky coastline not enabling much leisurely lounging. Several scenic seafood eateries can be found along Ammoudi Bay. Though the descent and climb back up the steep hills surrounding the port can be taxing, it is easy to hire a cab at the bottom of the trail to provide transport back to the hotel. Restaurant staff are typically happy to assist visitors by calling a taxi once a snack is purchased.
  • View: Overlooking the caldera with excellent views that lookout over the volcanic crater.
  • Private Pools/Jacuzzis: Most room categories feature a private jacuzzi, pool, or both. Wet Junior Suites and Honeymoon Suites feature outdoor jacuzzis; Superior Suites have indoor jacuzzis; Katikies Kirini Suites have indoor jacuzzis and outdoor plunge pools; while the Master Suite has a private pool.
  • Parking: Free valet automobile parking on location.
  • Additions: Boutique with exclusive Greek-styled products; hospitality room for early arrivals or late departures; choice of luxury amenities; Katikies Club private experiences; small weddings and events.
  • When you should Book: The hotel operates from April 1st until November 15th. Reserve no less than 4 months in advance (6 months is better) for keeps during the peak season from June through September, and roughly 2 months in advance for the low and shoulder seasons.

  • Physical fitness facilities: Small but well-equipped gym that can be reserved for private workout sessions.

  • Smoking Rooms: The hotel does not permit smoking in any of their room categories. It is allowed on the private outdoor terraces, and in the outdoor common areas.
  • Best Room: The Kirini Suite with Plunge Pool is considered the top room choice. At 45 square meters, it is the largest suite in the hotel. This 1-bedroom suite includes a king bed, separate living area with small dining section, and a big veranda (nearly as large as the room itself) equipped with an outdoor dining table, heated plunge pool, and 2 sun loungers.
  • For Families: This hotel caters only to guests ages 13 and older as there are no child-friendly facilities or rooms that can sleep more than 3 people.

Katikies Kirini – Local Transport

  • Getting Around on Foot: The hotel is situated at the entrance to Oia, along the Oia-Fira trail. It is a 14-minute walk west to reach the core of Oia, where you`ll find many dining and retail options as well as the bus terminal. Head east to find the traditional village Finikia with a couple great restaurants and Sigalas winery. The Oia Castle ruins are just a 22-minute walk away, while Ammoudi Bay is a further 5 minutes past the castle at the base of the caldera.
  • Bus: The hotel is situated between two nearby bus stops. The closer of the two routes terminates at the entrance to Finikia village, requiring approximately a 13-minute walk east along the primary road fronting Alonistra Oia Houses. The main Oia Bus Terminal lies 14 minutes west of the hotel. All buses passing through Finikia similarly serve Oia, yet the express Baxedes route to Oia bypasses Finikia. Public transportation here accesses all significant villages and beaches across the island, often necessitating a transfer in Fira. Fares are purchased on board, ranging from €1.80 to €2.50 per person during daytime hours contingent on the route. Nighttime buses (12:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.) run less regularly and cost somewhat more, from €2.30 to €3.10. Transportation can get very crowded, particularly in high season, to such an extent that capacity is often reached without room for additional passengers. Only 23 public buses serve the island. Hence, it is preferable to board at the primary Oia Bus Terminal stop when departing the hotel to explore, as it is the first. Returning, disembark in Finikia to shorten the walk back to the hotel.
  • Taxis: The closest taxi stand is located at Stathmos Taxi, near the Oia Bus Terminal. There are only 25 taxis serving the entire island from the approximately 1,000 hotels, villas, and Airbnbs with guests. It is often busy here as a wait is common. To avoid waiting, booking ahead allows the taxis to meet you directly at your hotel near the parking area. A small additional charge is typical for reservations made in advance and for transporting luggage, usually only a couple Euros. The average fare from Oia to Fira is around €20, while from Oia to the airport is roughly €35 to €40.
  • Motorbikes: Locals commonly use motor scooters as transport, but unfamiliar roads present hazards. Thoroughfares zigzag steeply upwards and downwards on narrow paths sometimes without guardrails or nighttime illumination. Unpaved trails and potholes are common.
  • ATVs/Quads: ATVs are an enjoyable and popular method of transportation with visitors, but for the locals required to drive behind them, they maneuver too gradually and hold up traffic in an area where moving around is already challenging. For individuals who don’t routinely ride quads (i.e. most people), they can be risky at high speeds and on turns. Crashed your ATV is a guaranteed way to ruin your vacation.
