Megalochori is a tranquil, traditional Santorinian village located about a 10-minute drive south of busy Fira. It features a charming town square surrounded by historic churches, pottery shops, and excellent family-owned tavernas, as well as some of the island’s top wineries. The town center is within walking distance of the edge of the renowned Santorini caldera, but many Megalochori hotels are situated directly along the cliff, with beautiful perspectives overlooking the sea – particularly superb at sunset. Most travelers who choose to stay in Megalochori prefer renting a car for easier access to Santorini’s best towns, beaches, and attractions.

Lay of the Land

Megalochori is a hidden gem off the beaten path in Santorini and among the island`s most charming, traditional villages dating to the 17th century. This laidback, casual town provides a nice escape from the busier cliffside and seaside communities. You`ll find a maze of narrow, winding alleyways containing conventional cave dwellings and blue-domed churches with elaborate bell towers. The central square sits pleasantly in the shadows of trees, kept warm and inviting by locals socializing in traditional cafes, wine bars and coffee shops. Several restaurants and a bit of shopping can also be enjoyed in Megalochori.

Attractions

  • In addition to conventional tavernas and quaint boutique shops, Megalochori Village offers beautiful scenic views of the ocean to the west and a vast valley of vineyards to the east.
  • Wineries: Megalochori is known for its sweet red wine Vinsanto that is produced here. Some excellent nearby wineries in the area include: Gavalas (our top pick), Venetsanos (with spectacular caldera perspectives), and Boutari.
  • Symposion: A musical and mythological center where you can listen to classical Greek songs and craft traditional instruments, is found around 50m from the village square.
  • The Ceramic Studio-Earth and Water is roughly 1.5 km from the square.
  • The Lost Atlantis Museum, dedicated to the famous mythical lost civilization and its ties to Santorini, is about 2 km from the square.
  • Panagia Ton Eisodion: Also known as Megalochori Cathedral, this place of worship is the most identifiable landmark in the village, with its intricate wood carved steeple featuring a small passageway to walk through.
  • Bell Tower: There are a few smaller belfry structures in Megalochori, but the most notable features 6 bells and an underground passageway. Directly to the north of Vedema Resort and Panagia Ton Eisodion.
  • The Heart of Santorini: Vantage point on the caldera at sunset with a walking trail winding down the caldera slope to naturally occurring heated pools nearly reaching the ocean.
