Hotel Review

Tamarix del Mar Suites – Kid-friendly, all-suite hotel with indoor and outdoor pools and sizable accommodations just two moments to Kamari Beach.

Tamarix del Mar is an excellent boutique hotel with a relaxed atmosphere and luxury amenities. Its full-service spa includes a sauna and an indoor heated pool with hydrotherapy. The courtyard also has a second pool adjoining a Jacuzzi. All suites include kitchenettes and private verandas; most include indoor Jacuzzi tubs, and many add private outdoor Jacuzzis. Family facilities include a children’s playroom, children’s pool attached to the main pool, and babysitting services upon request. Though close to all that Kamari Beach has to offer, the immediate area remains tranquil.

Tamarix del Mar – Location

Tamarix del Mar sits just 2 minutes’ walk from the shores of Santorini’s popular Kamari Beach, a stunning stretch of black beach on a dark blue sea. Several eateries, beach clubs, and shops are within steps of the hotel, with a couple of great bars and the Open Air Cinema a little further away. Kamari is ideally located within a quick 5 to 25-minute drive to Santorini’s most beloved attractions including the caldera, the nightlife in Fira, the ruins of Ancient Thera and Akrotiri, wine country, and the traditional village of Pyrgos.

How to Get There:
The lodging is located along one of the primary roads close to Kamari Beach`s public parking lot, making it effortless to travel to and from via taxi, personal vehicle, or bus. It is approximately 10km from the Athinios ferry terminal as well as 6km from the Santorini Airport to the hotel

Coaches are consistently waiting at the ferry terminal for each ferry arrival, as well as buses departing hourly from Santorini Airport. There are no direct public transportation options from the port or airport to Kamari village; buses from both locations travel to Fira initially, where a separate coach must then be boarded to Kamari – the entire trip from the port or airport to Kamari generally takes at least an hour and costs around €5 total. Tickets are purchased directly on the bus using cash only. The halt for Kamari is an easy 9-minute walk to the hotel along a predominantly level route.

Vehicle transportation called Taxis is also available from the port or airport, though only roughly 25 taxis serve the entire island, so there is frequently a waiting period; scheduling a ride beforehand through a private car service can prevent this (I utilize and recommend Welcome Pickups). Taxis on Santorini do not use meters, so be sure to agree on a price with the driver before departing. A taxi from the airport to Tamarix del Mar will cost approximately €20. A taxi from the ferry port to the hotel will cost around €30. Booking through a private car service will cost just a bit more – about $45 (or €37), but is worth it to avoid the wait and for the convenience of paying ahead.

For those who opt for self-driving, we advise renting a vehicle either on arrival at the airport, or in Fira. The road from the ferry port is steep and narrow, with many abrupt switchbacks, bulky trucks, and shuttles. Leave that navigation to locals. We strongly recommend reserving a car ahead of time, especially if you require automatic transmission. Upon reaching Kamari, Tamarix del Mar provides free parking out front of the hotel (a major advantage). If the hotel lot is full, there are 2 complimentary parking areas nearby, each just a 4-minute walk from the hotel.

Tamarix del Mar – Local Transport

  • Ambulating: The hotel is located near the southern limitation of Santorini’s most well-known shoreline, Kamari, simply 2 minutes from the water and with restaurants, shoreline clubs, bars, and shopping within a 1 to 11-minute interval walk of the hotel. The hotel is on the contrary side of the island from the caldera, so all roads and paths in the town or on the beachfront are fairly level. Kamari Beach is 1.5 km long with a wide promenade along the beachfront, making it a well-liked spot for strolling or jogging. From the hotel, it is a 50-minute climb to the top of Mesa Vouno, Santorini’s second highest peak and the damages of Antique Thera, a 9th-century settlement.
  • Transportation by Bus: The bus stop for Kamari sits along the main road connecting Fira airport to the beach, an easy 10-minute walk along a mostly flat route. Buses from Kamari to most island locales necessitate a transfer in opposite side Fira. Because of this, the entire trip from Kamari to port or airport will take approximately one hour or 2 instead of a 10 or 20-minute drive. Tickets purchase on board, priced €1.80 to €2.50 per person daytime depending the route. Night buses (12:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.) run less regularly, costing a little more from €2.30 to €3.10. With only 23 serving buses, overcrowding occurs especially high season, often filling capacity and unable taking additional passengers. If time limited, catch a taxi or rent a car potentially better.
  • Taxis are not stationed at Kamari Beach, making it preferable to have the hotel telephone one as required. Only 25 vehicles serve the island, so booking in advance when possible can prevent delays, and requesting pickup directly from the hotel. A small additional charge applies for prearranging and luggage, generally just a couple Euros. The average fare from Tamarix del Mar to Fira or the ferry port is about €30, and from the hotel to the airport around €20.
  • Motorized Transportation: Scooters are the primary mode of transportation for locals, yet unfamiliar terrain makes their operation risky. Roads zigzag and climb hills at steep angles with sheer drops lacking guardrails or nighttime lighting in most areas. Numerous dirt paths and sunken sections are present.
  • ATVs/Quads: While ATVs offer amusement and are commonly used by visitors, locals stuck behind them may find their slower pace and congesting of roadways troublesome in an area where transportation is already difficult. Those without regular experience operating quads (i.e. most people) could face hazards at high speeds or on turns. Crashes can easily ruin one`s holiday.
